Minnesota weather can be harsh on roofs, especially the flat or low-sloping ones. They’re constantly exposed to the sky, making them the perfect target for heat damage, hail damage, and ice dams. Thankfully, modern roofing materials like EPDM are sturdy enough to withstand the weather and protect your business year after year.
Aka “rubber roofing,” this single-ply synthetic membrane is produced from natural gas and oil, making it highly water resistant. The technical name is Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer (you can see why we use the abbreviation). But a single layer of this membrane can protect your entire roof for decades. Here’s how:
Because of its synthetic ingredients, EPDM is able to expand and contract as the temperatures shift. This makes it ideal to install around rooftop features like skylights, HVAC systems, and exterior pipes where leaks might otherwise occur. EPDM also comes in a variety of colors, thicknesses, and finishes so you can customize the look to blend in with your building.
EPDM is installed by unspooling large rolls of the membrane across a roofing system. Larger rolls means fewer seams and, therefore, fewer weak spots that can shrink or crack over time. When the time does come to do roofing repairs, a roofing team can easily patch those points.
We’ve just scratched the surface of what makes EPDM a high-quality roofing material for so many commercial (and residential) buildings. Check back next week to learn the two most cost-saving qualities about it.
