How to Document Storm Damage on Your Roof

Big thunderstorms have already hit Minnesota this summer, and high winds have damaged many roofs. But how do you know whether your roof has sustained storm damage?

Here’s our quick and easy guide for how to go about finding and documenting damage before you file a storm damage claim with your insurance company.

Check inside

Start at the top of your home and work down. That means grabbing your smartphone or camera and heading to the attic (if you can access it) during the daytime. Doing it in daylight will allow you to see where breaks are coming through the wood. You’ll also want to bring a flashlight to shine in dark corners and check for sagging beneath your roofing system.

Head outside

Get a good look at the exterior of your home by walking below the roof’s perimeter. Try to examine as much as you can from the ground. You may find torn shingles, loose debris, or bent and detached flashing in your yard or dangling from your house. This physical damage could help you locate water intrusion, making it easier to clean up later.

Go up on the roof

Using the appropriate equipment to prevent a fall, climb a ladder to your rooftop and get a closer look at the surface. Check for cracked, curling, or missing shingles. Mark spots where water intrusion has occurred. And photograph any loose nails or gutter debris. All of this will help you document potential roof damage and smooth the storm damage claims process.
